The Difference Between Screen & Digital Printing

HomeBlogThe Difference Between Screen & Digital Printing

Two of the most popular forms of apparel printing are screen & digital printing. Each is best suited for specific graphics and materials to create that perfect look. We specialize in both at Common Threads Embroidery and Apparel, and we are here to provide the best services for our clients based on their unique needs.

The Difference Between Screen & Digital Printing

Here are three key differences between screen & digital printing:

  1. Traditional vs. Modern Techniques – Screen printing has been around for centuries, while digital printing is a modern technique. Screen printing utilizes a stencil, or screen, to apply layered ink onto the printing surface, such as a t-shirt. Digital printing applies a computerized image to apparel, not unlike your office paper printer.
  1. Larger vs. Smaller Orders – Contrary to what you might think, screen printing is more cost-effective than digital printing for larger orders. This is because once the screen stencil is set, bulk application costs are quite low. Digital printing is much easier to set up, so it can be more economical for small quantities.
  1. Vibrant vs. Detailed Images – If vibrancy is what you are after, especially on dark apparel, screen printing is the way to go. However, more detailed graphics are better suited for digital printing as the computerized printing process allows for a more precise image.
